Situation

During college, I helped my aunt manage her small sari-sari store finances after she struggled with unexpected medical expenses that depleted her savings. She had no insurance and had to borrow at high interest.

Task

I needed to understand her cash flow, prioritize debt repayment, and find a way to protect her from future emergencies without a formal financial background.

Action

I researched microinsurance options, spoke to a family friend who was a financial advisor, and realized how proper planning could have given her a safety net. I drafted a simple budget and encouraged her to set aside a small weekly amount for a health protection plan. I also started reading about financial literacy and saw how many Filipino families lack basic protection.

Result

My aunt was able to get a small insurance policy, and she now recommends it to neighbors. That experience made me realize I wanted to help more families secure their future, which drew me to Sun Life's mission of lifetime financial security.
