Situation

In my accounting internship, I discovered that I thrived when reviewing audit checklists and finding mismatches rather than when I was assigned to client calls. I also enjoyed teaching our new OJT hires how to use the reconciliation software, which made me realize I like building team capability.

Task

I wanted to articulate why a back-office, risk-focused role fits my natural strengths and career goals, and to show my willingness to support junior team members.

Action

I reflected on my internship experiences: I felt most energized when I dug into regulatory circulars and mapped them to our internal reports, or when I built a quick reference guide for newbies. In my next interview for a similar role, I was able to convincingly explain that I find fulfillment in protecting the business from behind the scenes, and that mentoring comes naturally to me because I remember how overwhelming compliance can be for beginners.
