Situation
While working part-time as a sales associate, I encountered an angry customer who demanded an immediate refund for a product that was clearly used, violating our store policy.
Task
I had to decide whether to strictly enforce the policy and risk losing a loyal customer or make an exception while maintaining fairness and store rules.
Action
I listened calmly to the customer's complaint to understand their perspective. Then I acknowledged their frustration and explained the policy kindly but firmly, offering an alternative solution: a replacement product in exchange for the used item. When the customer escalated, I consulted my supervisor but took the lead in presenting the compromise.
Result
The customer accepted the replacement, and my supervisor commended me for handling the situation diplomatically without deviating from company guidelines. The customer later returned to shop with us again.
