Situation

For our capstone project, I partnered with two classmates: one from Mechanical Engineering and one from Business Administration. Our task was to design a cost-effective solar-powered water pump for off-grid farms.

Task

We had to integrate three distinct perspectives: technical feasibility, manufacturability, and market viability. Early on, we clashed over methodology: the engineer wanted to prioritise pump efficiency, the business student focused on customer willingness to pay, and I, as a Chemical Engineering student, was caught in the middle trying to ensure material compatibility.

Action

I suggested we set aside an afternoon to map out each person's strengths and concerns using a simple whiteboard. We then agreed to run parallel workstreams for one week: the engineer modelled three pump configurations, the business student surveyed 20 farmers via phone, and I tested material options. We reconvened, and I facilitated a decision matrix that weighted technical performance, material cost, and farmer feedback equally. I also summarised each meeting with clear action items to avoid repetition.

Result

We submitted a cohesive proposal that included a detailed pump design, a PHP 2,500 unit cost estimate, and a farmer-friendly payment scheme. Our project won best paper at the college research colloquium, and the panel praised our interdisciplinary integration.
