Why consulting, and why Bain, specifically for you?

Situation

During my final year as an economics major at the University of the Philippines, I attended a Bain & Company info session on campus and was immediately drawn to the firm's people-first culture and the kind of high-impact work they do.

Task

I needed to articulate a compelling, personal reason for choosing management consulting over other fields and Bain over other firms, beyond just brand prestige.

Action

I reflected on two prior internships in a local telco and a startup: at the telco, I helped draft a growth strategy for a new prepaid product and saw how structured analysis directly shaped executive decisions. At the startup, I led a small team to reduce customer churn by 12% in one quarter by designing targeted promos based on usage patterns. For Bain specifically, I researched their recent work on digital transformation in Southeast Asian retail and noted how their interview format emphasized collaboration and structure rather than trick questions. I also spoke with two Filipino consultants from Bain who mentioned inclusive culture and early client exposure.

Result

I connected my experience solving real business problems to Bain's philosophy of 'results that matter,' which earned a nod from the interviewer and led to a second-round invite.
