The employer is checking if you can demonstrate confident, client-friendly communication when the client refuses to give direction, which is common for remote social media VAs who must lead the creative process.
In a role-play, first validate the client's request, then immediately give them a low-effort decision to make, and explain what you will do after they choose.
Start by treating their open-ended request as a gift, not a burden. Say something like, "I love that you trust me, and I'll make it easy for you." Then immediately narrow the infinite space into one simple, low-effort choice. For example, ask if they want the page to feel more energetic and playful, or more polished and premium. Frame it as a two-second pick, not a creative brief. After they choose, explain your next concrete step: you will draft three visual directions, each with a short caption and sample post, and send them within two days. Tell them they only need to say "A, B, or C" and you will build the rest from there. If they hesitate again, offer a default: "If you don't have a preference, I'll go with the energetic direction and show you the result." This keeps momentum while respecting that they hired you for your judgment. In a Philippine context, you can close in a warm but professional register, saying "I'll take care of it, and you'll just approve or tweak." That reassures them you are leading, not guessing, and that their approval point is minimal.
Do not say 'Sige po, bahala na' and disappear, because that creates a risky guessing game. Instead say, 'I'll bring you three options so you can simply choose, then I'll take it from there.'
Situation
In this role-play, I imagine a previous client from my freelance work who told me, 'Just surprise me,' when I asked about the visual direction for their boutique's Instagram.
Task
I needed to take ownership without guessing blindly, and to give the client a safe way to react to my ideas before I produced a full month of content.
Action
I would respond by saying, 'I can do that. To make sure the surprise is still on brand, I'll prepare three quick visual directions based on your current best posts. You just have to pick your favorite, and I'll handle the rest.' I would then show three simple mood boards with different feels: minimalist, warm and personal, and bold and promotional. I would ask the client to rank them from most to least 'fresh' in their eyes.
Result
In the previous project, the client picked the warm and personal board, gave one small note about avoiding too much beige, and I produced a month of content that was approved with only two edits.
When a client says 'surprise me,' you still give them a structured choice so your creativity stays aligned.
