URC's selection process includes the B.I.T.E. case competition to test analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication under pressure. This question mirrors that challenge to see if you can think like a business manager.
Outline a structured approach: first, ask clarifying questions to define the problem; second, break down the issue into internal/external factors using frameworks only if relevant; third, propose actionable solutions tied to realistic outcomes; and fourth, explain how you'd measure success. Use specific Philippine market examples where possible.
Start by restating the business question in one sentence: why is the brand declining, and what should be done about it. Then split the analysis into two buckets, external (category trends, competitor moves, channel shifts) and internal (pricing, distribution gaps, product quality complaints, marketing spend changes), and use whatever data is given to rule buckets in or out rather than guessing. Once you've identified the one or two most likely drivers, propose a recommendation with three parts: an immediate fix (for example, correcting an out-of-stock or pricing issue), a medium-term action (a targeted promotion or renovated pack/flavor), and a way to track whether it worked (a specific sales or share metric over a defined period). Present the recommendation first, then the supporting logic, so the panel gets the answer before the reasoning. Keep the whole structure visible on one slide or page so it's easy to follow under time pressure.
Many candidates over-explain frameworks without connecting to the brand's actual customers. Avoid saying just 'I will do a SWOT analysis.' Instead, show how you'd apply it to the specific problem with local context, like mentioning the shift to sari-sari stores or digital wallets.
Situation
During my final year in university, I joined a business case competition sponsored by a local FMCG company. Our team was given a real-life scenario where a popular biscuit brand had lost 15% market share in two years, and we had only three days to analyze and present.
Task
My task was to lead the data analysis and help craft the recommendation slide deck for the final presentation.
Action
I first gathered publicly available market data from PSA and industry reports, then segmented the brand's consumers by age and region. I discovered the decline was sharpest among younger millennials in urban areas. I proposed a rebranding campaign with digital-first strategies and a new healthier variant. I built a simple financial model projecting the brand's recovery in 12 months.
Result
Our team placed second out of 30 teams. The judges specifically praised our data-driven approach and the clarity of our financial projections.
I learned that even with limited information, focusing on the most critical data points and presenting a clear, logical story can make a compelling case.
